The North Carolina Attorney General recently issued a consumer alert, warning employers not to fall for the scare tactics companies are using to sell their North Carolina labor posters.

Under state law, North Carolina employers are required to display labor law posters regarding state wage and hour laws, employment discrimination, occupational safety and health laws, unemployment insurance and, for employers with 3 or more employees, workers’ compensation benefits.  Recently, a company has been contacting North Carolina employers, pressuring them to purchase labor posters.  Their tactic is to claim that employers will be in violation of the posting requirements unless they purchase the labor posters from the company.

Don’t fall for this scam.  North Carolina employers can obtain all required state labor law posters for free.

  • Employers can receive free permanent posters covering state wage and hour laws, employment discrimination and occupational safety and health from the NC Department of Labor by calling 1-800-625-2267 or ordering the posters online from its website. In the meantime, employers can also print temporary versions of these posters from the Department of Labor’s website;
  • The unemployment insurance poster can be obtained for free at the NC Division of Employment Security Unemployment Insurance Division’s website; and
  • Employers can obtain the worker’s compensation poster for free at the NC Industrial Commission’s website.

If you have been or are contacted by a company threatening you to purchase NC labor law posters, you may also report the company to the NC Department of Justice’s Consumer Protection Division online at http://ncdoj.gov/complaint or by calling 1-877-5-NO-SCAM.
